SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF RC BRIDGE PIERS CONSIDERING AGING OF BASE-ISOLATED RUBBER

Abstract eng:
After the Hyogoken-Nunbu earthquake, base-isolated bearings have been widely adopted in order to improve seismic performance of bridges. So, in the recent years, many researches have been carried out on the dynamic response of rubber bearings or on the seismic response of the base isolated bridges. Meanwhile, the ageing problems of bridge systems have been realized for many years. It is usually known the rubber performance deteriorates due to ageing. For instance, the stiffness and hardness of the rubber increase. However, there are only few studies so far on the aging of base-isolated rubber bearings. Therefore, in this study, the purpose is to evaluate the influence of aged rubber bearings on the seismic response of RC bridge piers. The relationship between ageing of base-isolated rubber and the bearings’ long-term performance is studied. Then the seismic responses of RC bridge piers are calculated through the dynamic analyses using two-degree of freedom model. Finally, a procedure to determine the longterm seismic performances of base-isolated bridges is discussed.
