000005023 520__ $$2eng$$aTurkey is one of the earthquake prone countries. In Turkey, most of the residential buildings are low and mid rise. In 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey, most of the low and mid rise buildings had been extensively damage or collapsed. Several R/C buildings with different characteristics damaged or collapsed in the earthquake areas were designed according to the Turkish design code. Even single storey buildings suffered severe damage and/or partial or complete collapse. The main purpose of this study is to understand the structural performance of low rise buildings. Therefore, a sample low rise building is dimensioned with and without infill walls and soft story irregularity. In order to conduct performance evaluation of sample low rise reinforced concrete building, performance based analysis as displacement coefficient method is performed. Push over analysis is done with triangular loading. Displacement coefficient method is conducted as performance based design methodology. As a result, low rise reinforce concrete buildings in Turkey is evaluated based on performance based assessment. Reasons for the heavy damages and collapses of low rise R/C buildings during severe earthquakes are explained in detail.
