EXPERT JUDGEMENT FOR COMBINING NDT TOOLS IN RBI CONTEXT: APPLICATION TO MARINE STRUCTURES

Abstract eng:
Most of the time, owners of civil infrastructures have the possibility of using quite a lot of techniques for inspection of structures, including non-destructive or semi-destructive testing tools. The purpose is to update the parameters of material damages or ageing laws in order to perform a calculation in reliability. Methods exist for integrating the inspection results into the decision scheme. These methods are named Risk Based Inspection (RBI). Objectives are to optimize the maintenance plans (inspection, repairs, etc.) while insuring a good safety and availability conditions during service life of structures. This paper focuses on the probabilistic modelling of inspections results in view to provide inputs in the computation of mathematical expectation of RBI cost models. The benefit of the combination of multiple inspections is discussed. Theoretical aspects coming from detection theory are reminded and the role of expert judgement when combining several Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is highlighted. The process is illustrated for the RBI of steel marine structures.
