RELIABILITY AND ROBUSTNESS-BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION (RRBDO)

Abstract eng:
This work is concerned with the explicit treatment of structural robustness within design optimization procedures. Damage tolerance is linked to structural robustness, which is associated with the ability of a structure to confine expected damage consequences to structural components and minimize expected consequences due to progressive system collapse. A risk-based measure of robustness is employed in the present work, which involves the calculation of structural damage and failure probabilities. This measure is used to incorporate robustness in the classical Reliability-Based Design Optimization formulation through a related constraint or objective. The resulting single and multi-objective optimization approaches, which are implemented using Genetic Algorithms, are capable of producing cost-effective structural designs with acceptable failure probabilities and high damage tolerance.
