SYSTEM RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF SHIP TRANSVERSE FRAME

Abstract eng:
Ship transverse frame is an essential part of the whole ship structure that act together with other structural components such as plating and stiffeners to resist various type of complex loads. This paper describes the ultimate strength evaluation of a typical transverse frame of a Single Skinned Tanker structure using Finite Element nonlinear analysis together with the reliability analysis using Response Surface Method (RSM). The basic idea of RSM is to achieve a good fit of the response surface function to the sampling points. In order to simplify the analysis and reduce the computation effort, a 2D finite element model of the transverse frame taking into account the effective width of the attached plating is considered. By considering both material and geometric nonlinearities, the simplified 2D FE model has been analysed under sea pressure loadings. From the finite element nonlinear analysis, the results were taken to the inhouse computer program for the reliability estimation using RSM.
