The earthquake is reported to have caused 519 deaths and 1,366 injuries and the collapse of more than 58,000 houses. The Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), part of the Institute of Structural Engineers of the United Kingdom, undertook a post-earthquake field survey mission to Peru. The mission focused on the behaviour of non-engineered structures, in particular those of adobe construction, but engineered structures and geotechnical effects were also surveyed. This paper presents the earthquake characteristics and summarises the main findings from the post-earthquake field survey carried out by the EEFIT team.
