Most research effort has been carried out in high seismicity countries such as Japan, USA and New Zealand, where these devices have been increasingly used during the last decade. However, with regard to low-to-moderate seismicity regions such as the Mediterranean area, passive systems are still rarely applied (with some exceptions like Italy). This paper presents a brief overview of the application of passive structural control systems in the moderate-seismicity Mediterranean area, and the work carried out by the author to introduce this technology in Spain. The results of several tests on reinforced concrete wide beam-column subassemblages, and waffle flat-plate structures equipped with a particular brace-type hysteretic damper consisting of steel plates with slits are summarized. Furthermore, information is provided about the first application in Spain of hysteretic dampers to a new building for seismic protection.
