000009697 520__ $$2eng$$aTo fully account for the severity of earthquake disasters in China and the complexity of earthquake disaster reduction efforts, this paper introduces the policy and countermeasures taken in China for earthquake disaster reduction as well as the latest development and achievement in the three frontlines for the efforts, that is, earthquake monitoring and prediction, earthquake disaster reduction and emergency response search and rescue. Challenged by the tragedy of the May 12, 2008, Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province, the paper further elaborates our latest thoughts on effective earthquake disaster reduction and its future direction in China.
