000009842 520__ $$2eng$$aIt is generally stated that an accurate evaluation of the equivalent viscous damping is a crucial step in the Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) methodology. A wrong assessment of equivalent viscous damping can indeed lead to important errors on the actual ductility demand of the structural elements. The objective of the present contribution is to assess and compare different existing formulas for the evaluation of the equivalent damping and to provide information on the impact of choosing one or another formulation on the seismic design. It is more precisely focused on the very recent proposals of Dwairi – Kowalsky and Blandon – Priestley.
