The focus is on methods to improve our understanding the built environment and its vulnerability to natural hazards, and on methods to better assess the impact of large natural disasters on urban areas. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of remote sensing technologies for disaster management, a number of cases studies are presented, including applications for the 1999 Marmara, Turkey earthquake, the 2003 Bam, Iran earthquake, and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The paper also provides a brief discussion on possible future directions for remote sensing in disaster management.
