Structural Monitoring with Inspection Robot

Abstract eng:
This paper presents the basic concept of a structural health monitoring scheme for ceilings with the aid of smart sensor boards and inspection robot. In this proposed scheme, the distributed smart sensor boards firstly detect the fact of damage occurrence. Next, the robot inspects the damage location and captures the photographic image of the damage condition. The smart sensor board for the proposed system mainly consists of microcontroller, strain gage and LAN module. The inspection robot integrated into the proposed system has a wireless camera and wireless LAN device for receiving signal to control the robot. The wireless camera can send the data to the place about 30m far away from the camera. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the smart sensor board and inspection robot are implemented into a full-scale model of a suspended ceiling set up on the shaking table. The model ceiling is subjected to several levels of seismic excitations and thus various levels of damages would be caused. The obtained results indicate that the proposed scheme can detect the location and condition of the damage.
