Energy Absorption Capacity of Steel Beams Subjected to Cyclic Bending Moment

Abstract eng:
When buildings are subjected to long-period ground motions, the number of cycles of overloading can be of several orders, leading to the formation of plastic zones. The energy absorption capacity of the beams of buildings is an important parameter to be considered during the evaluation of the seismic capacity of frames with weak beams. In this study, we quantitatively evaluate the relation between the number of loading cycles and the energy absorption capacity of beams by performing a series of experiments on specimens with an identical shape subjected to cyclic loading. The experimental results show the relation between the energy absorption capacity of beams under monotonic loading ( η 0 ) and cyclic loading ( η d ), the average of the half-cycle energy ( ∆η m ), and the number of effective half-cycles ( N e ). Moreover, a method for estimating η 0 is also proposed.
