A Parametric Study on Seismic Behavior of Continuous Buried Pipelines Due to Wave Propagation

Abstract eng:
A T Due to their efficiency, buried pipe D r elines are be eing widely used to tran nsfer water, crude oil an other nd petrochemica liquid produ in large q p al ucts quantities and far distance Since grou displacem can cause serious d es. und ment e damages to t these facilitie it is neces es, ssary to inve estigate the seismic behav vior of the bu uried pipeline under es severe earthq quakes. In tha regard, attempts have be made for mathematica modeling o the buried p at een al of pipelines to capture the true respon under ear t eir nse rthquake exci itations. Using the concept of beams on elastic foundation, a t n number of 3-D finite elem models ar prepared fo a portion of a continuou pipeline system. In these models, n ment re or o us e the slippage b t between the surrounding so and the pipe is observe by means o nonlinear elastoplastic sp s oil ed of prings in three orthogonal directio t ons. Nonlinea dynamic time history analyses h ar y have been ca arried out using the displacement time history of the stron ground mo t y ng otions in thre normal dir ee rections as an input. An e n extensive parametric study is perf p formed to in nvestigate the seismic be e ehavior of the system, considering different parameters such as pipe's diameter and modulus of elasticity the burial depth, intern pressure, and the p a y, nal surrounding soil type. Al lso, the seism behavior of the buried pipelines w bends is studied, con mic d with s nsidering different bend angles and distance to th bend param d he meter. As the results indicate, the induc axial and bending ced stresses to th straight b he buried pipelin in sever earthquake are much less than pipelines with bends. nes re es p h Furthermore, increasing th bend angle will lead to l F he e larger stress concentration around the bend area. c KEYWORD Pipelines, Ground Disp K DS: placement, sli ippage, Nonli inear Dynami Analysis ic
