Sloshing Reduction Effect of Splitting Wall in Cylindrical Tank

Abstract eng:
Many petroleum tanks were damaged by sloshing during 2003 Tokachi-oki, Japan. Large earthquakes are predicted to occur within 50 years, which will cause the similar damage. In this paper, we develop a splitting wall as a new sloshing reduction device. Model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to examine the effect of the device. The experimental results indicate the proposed device is effective to reduce sloshing against sinusoidal input motion. We also perform numerical study to simulate the experimental result. Both experimental and numerical results are almost same. Based on the numerical simulation, the proposed device can be also effective against earthquake ground motion. 2
