Lessons Learned from Wenchuan Earthquake: To Improve the Seismic Design of School Buildings
Abstract eng: School buildings collapsed or were seriously damaged in the 512 Wenchuan earthquake. Thousands of students and teachers were killed. There has been a significant social impact. Structural safety of school buildings during seismic activity was a seriously concern after the earthquake. In this paper, the structural characteristics of damaged school buildings are surveyed and seismic evaluation of these structures is discussed. A series of measures for improving the seismic performance of school buildings in terms of building function, structure types and configurations, and materials used are discussed.
