Assessment and improvement of test data in spacecraft base-driven sine vibration test

Abstract eng:
This paper describes the main objectives and some identified methods of the study “DYNAMITED”, acronym for “Assessment and improvement of dynamic test data”. The study is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and performed by a consortium of European industries and university, led by EADS Astrium Satellites. The main objectives of the study “Dynamited” are to assess and quantify the uncertainty in the spacecraft sine vibration test data and to improve the quality and representativity of test data by introducing a set of testing procedures, methods and controls to be used during test preparation, execution and post-test analysis. The study started in December 2006 and is in progress under the technical management of ESA. In particular this paper provides an overview on two investigations in the area of the development of pre-test methodologies: the estimation of the scatter (uncertainties) on the spacecraft dynamic response due to identified sources of test uncertainties and the calculation of a “notched” sine test input spectrum based on a stochastic methodology. By means of Monte Carlo simulation, a stochastic cloud of the output of interest can be generated and this provides an estimate of the global error on test results. The cloud is generated by characterizing the assumed sources of test uncertainties by parameters of the structure finite element model and by quantifying the scatter of the parameters. The uncertain parameters are the input variables of the Monte Carlo simulation. It has been planned that all the developments of the study will be tested during the test campaign of the ESA spacecraft SWARM, in the first half of 2009.
