2d modeling of dry joint masonry walls regarded as anisotropic continuous media under horizontal body forces

Abstract eng:
The paper deals with the numerical implementation of a constitutive relationship for modeling the behavior of block structures with periodic texture, regarded at a macroscopic scale as homogenized anisotropic media. The macroscopic model retains memory of the mechanical characteristics of the joints and of the shape of the blocks, displaying anisotropy and singularities in the yield surface, which derive from the discrete nature of the block structure and the geometrical arrangement of the units. The model is formulated in the framework of multi-surface infinitesimal plasticity and is implemented in the FE code Opensees. Its capability in representing the behavior of block masonry up to failure is investigated by means of the numerical simulation of an experimental test of a masonry panel subjected to its weight and to horizontal body forces. The Numerical simulation also highlights to what extent the presence of openings in the panel may affect its resistance to lateral loads.
