Estimating the seismic response of base isolated buildings through a response spectrum analysis procedure

Abstract eng:
The paper presents a response spectrum analysis procedure suitable for base isolated buildings. This procedure is based on the fact that the isolation system may be treated separately since the superstructure behaves as a rigid body on well selected isolation system, the analysis of this latter is performed using a response spectra generated for a single isolated mass where the isolation devices are modeled using the well known Bouc Wen hysteretic model. The results obtained, namely base shear and base displacement are then used to determine the superstructure story shear forces and displacements using the proposed response spectrum analysis procedure. The accuracy of the proposed procedure was evaluated and checked based on comparisons with nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. The present procedure can replace the linearization theory and overcome the limits of its applicability. Also, illustrative examples of application are given at the end.
