Seismic bridge response with non-linear soil-structure interaction

Abstract eng:
In this work a substructure technique is introduced to consider the simultaneous influence of spatially non-uniform soil-structure interaction and ground excitation on the response of bridge structures under strong earthquakes. The bridge structures with their footings and the subsoil are modeled using finite elements and boundary elements, respectively. The influence of pounding and separation at bridge girders is incorporated in the time domain, and the response of the bridge structures-soil system is calculated in the Laplace domain. The results reveal the significant influence of soil-structure interaction together with spatial variation of the ground motions. These influences cannot be observed from analysis with an assumption of uniform ground excitation of fixed-base bridge structures.
