Parametric instability of a wheelset of high-speed train caused by the spatial periodicity of a railway track

Abstract eng:
The wheelsets of a train running at constant speed can be expected to experience parametric resonance due to the spatial periodicity of the rail-supporting structure. The wheelset is modelled as a single-mass oscillator moving along the track. The model for the track is an infinitely long Timoshenko beam on identical, periodically spaced, flexible discrete supports. It is assumed that no external vertical forces act on the wheelset-track system. A procedure is developed for finding the system parameters that correspond to periodic vibrations of the moving wheelset with non-zero amplitudes. Given the assumed linearity of the system and a non-zero damping in the rail-supporting structure, these system parameters define the boundaries of the zones of parametric resonance. Within these zones, the vertical vibrations of the wheelsets are unstable.
