Energy-based analysis and design of structures under seismic loading

Abstract eng:
The paper analyses the energy distribution in multi-story frame structure during earthquake. The evaluation and analysis of seismic energy in the structure in time domain enables understanding of the structural behavior and the application in structural seismic design. The seismic energy in the structure is expressed as the sum of kinetic energy, damping energy and strain energy, which is composed of recoverable strain energy and unrecoverable hysteric energy. Displacements of the structure and their derivatives are expressed on the base of modal analysis. In the design process of the structure we maximize the dissipated energy (damping energy plus the plastic strain energy). Result of the optimization is the earthquake resistant structure. Theory is applied in the example of frame bracing system with added energy dissipation devices.
