Data assimilation in structural mechanics using displacement feedback control

Abstract eng:
The paper presents a numerical strategy able to control in a stable way the effect of the modelling errors in elastodynamics by using measurements of the boundary displacements. The basic idea is to apply a feedback within the numerical model not as a force but as a perturbation term in the equation relating displacement and velocity. The efficiency of the strategy is inherited from a proper choice of a boundary lifting operator which maximizes the energy dissipation properties of the system under study. The resulting estimation procedure is analysed and its performance is assessed by computing the estimation error in a test problem inspired from cardiac biomechanics.
