Seismic design of buildings with energy dissipation devices

Abstract eng:
This paper presents a procedure for the random vibration analysis of buildings and a procedure for designing the supplemental damping. Asymmetries in-plan and in-elevation are considered, and it is also considered the nonlinear behavior of the structure. The analysis procedure is based on the stochastic equivalent linearization method and on the transfermatrix technique. To carry out a realistic design example, a 6-storey steel building with a setback is analyzed to illustrate the suggested procedures for the probabilistic response evaluation and the one for designating viscous-fluid dampers for nonlinear structures. From this example, it is observed that the placement of a limited supplemental damping, equivalent to a 4% damping ratio, produced a floor rotation reduction of 45% and considerable reductions in ductility demands.
