Investigation of material quality effect on seismic performance of existing r/c buildings

Abstract eng:
Past and recent earthquakes revealed the fact that existing buildings in many earthquake prone countries, like Turkey, have various deficiencies regarding their seismic performances, thus many of them experienced heavy damage and total collapse causing life and economic losses. There are several vulnerability assessment procedures including codebased detailed analysis methods as well as preliminary assessment techniques which based on inspection and experience to identify the safety level of buildings. Various parameters affect the seismic behaviour of buildings, such as dimensions and lay-out of structural members, existence of structural irregularities, presence of soft story or/and, weak story, short columns and heavy overhangs, pounding effects, construction and the workmanship quality, soil condition, etc. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of the material qualities on seismic behaviour of R/C buildings to be used for preliminary seismic assessment of existing buildings. A parametric study has been carried out on three case study buildings from the Turkish building stock. The concrete qualities are changed from C10, C20, C30 and the column reinforcements with low, medium and high corrosion levels are considered. 3D and 2D nonlinear analyses of the case study buildings, one of which was totally collapsed in Kocaeli Earthquake of 1999, have been performed using SeismoStruct structural analysis software. A code-based designed control building has been considered for each sample structure with C20 concrete quality, confined members and no corrosion effect. Static push-over analyses have been performed and base shear versus top displacement curves are drawn for each building in two orthogonal directions. Then both shear force and energy based comparisons have been presented and discussed. The mean values of the drop in the performance are computed and factors are suggested to be utilized in preliminary assessment techniques.
