A parametric study of tdm's for regular buildings under earthquakes

Abstract eng:
The work presented in the current paper, in the sequel of previous general applications of Paredes [1], concerns the study of the performance of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD’s) applied in buildings under seismic loads, with the help of commercial finite element analysis software (ANSYS). The design parameters of the TMD’s were calculated according to method suggested by Villaverde [2] concerning the use of TMD’s in a building to mitigate the seismic effects on the structure. This parametric study was done accounting for variations with respect to the following targeted parameters: number of stories of the buildings, TMD mass ratio µ, and the earthquake input signals. The buildings were modelled as shear buildings with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 stories, and subjected to the El Centro and Kobe earthquakes. The values of µ studied ranged from 0 (no TMD) to 0.05 with increments of 0.01. The response of the structures to each situation was accessed in terms of maximum displacement, velocity and acceleration at the selected top location.
