Seismic Design Methodology for Control of 3D Buildings by Means of Multiple Tuned-Mass-Dampers

Abstract eng:
This paper presents a methodology for the optimal design of multiple Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) in 3D irregular buildings. The objective function minimizes the total mass of all added TMDs. Constraints are added to limit the total accelerations experienced at the edges of the floors in the direction parallel to each edge. The formulation of the design methodology relies on optimality criteria conjectured herein, hence, a two stage iterative analysis/redesign procedure that is based on analysis tools only is resulted. This allows the application of the methodology in a practical design process.
