High Strength Steel for Seismic Resistance of Beam to Column Connections

Due to its higher tensile strength, toughness, weldability, and corrosion resistance compared to mild steel grades, High Strength Steel (HSS) has been increasingly used in the construction of buildings and bridges in regions subjected to earthquake hazard. However, there is a dearth of information about the detailed seismic behavior of HSS in beam-to-column connections. Research should focus on the characterization of the connected members and/or connections composed of HSS. Since connections between structural members are the regions exposed to high deformation demands, minimizing the cross-sections of components of connections using HSS as the beam-to-column connections can provide great economic benefits. On the other hand, conventional HSS possesses poor deformation capacity compared to mild steel, making it undesirable for seismic resistant structures. The research project described in this poster aims to investigate the effects of using new bainitic HSS, which has greater deformation capacity, in dissipative beam-to-column connections of high ductility structures. Seismic performance of the structures are being evaluated analytically under three different earthquake levels by modeling connections composed of HSS. The aims of this study include (i) the design of connections using HSS to concentrate yielding at the connections instead of at the ends of the beams, (ii) the characterization of connection response and (iii) the minimization of the cross-sections used in the connected members. Using HSS in addition to semi-rigid connections is expected to result in significant weight reduction, hence reduction in inertia loads. Furthermore, designing connections with higher quality steel will ensure control of yielding sequence since HSS has lower random variability. Early results from the research project are presented in the poster.
