Rapid Preliminary Seismic Assessment Methodology for Non-Conforming Reinforced Concrete Buildings

Abstract eng:
In this paper, application of a rapid, yet efficient methodology for the evaluation of failure modes of lightly reinforced substandard buildings is presented. The method determines the limiting shear resistance of the structure as the least value supported by the columns’ pure flexural, degraded shear, anchorage or lap-splice and joint shear resistance mechanisms. For application of the methodology only knowledge of the basic geometric and material properties of the building is required. The proposed methodology is applied to a number of Reinforced Concrete buildings that failed during past strong earthquakes for verification reasons. It is shown that the proposed methodology is ideal for rapid preliminary seismic assessment and it can be used both as a diagnostic tool for identification of the building’s fragility and the prevailing mechanism of building failure.
