A Comparison of Methods for Interfacing Nonmatching Meshes in Computational Multiphysics

Abstract eng:
This Plenary Lecture proposes and discusses a taxonomy of methods for the interface treatment of the interface in coupled multiphysics, with focus on fluid-structure interaction and nonmatching meshes. The top-level classification, first presented in [1], is based on the presence or absence of Additional Interface Variables (AIV) as well as their type. Associated prototype methods: Direct Force Motion Transfer (DFMT), Mortar, and Localized Lagrange Multipliers (LLM) are defined. These are later compared qualitatively and quantitatively using benchmark problems considered in Ross' 2006 thesis, which involve FSI interaction in gravity and arch dams subjected to seismic action [2,3]. Desirable attributes of the interfacing methods are compiled and commented upon. .
