Use of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition for Detecting Defaults in Mechanical Structures

Abstract eng:
Some research works investigating the applicability of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to linear structural vibration analysis have reported in the literature. In this work, proper orthogonal modes (POM’s) from the POD are considered for detecting structural defaults is studied whether conditions for them to be considered as the normal modes of the structure are verified or not. The study is first carried in the case of mechanical structures made of homogeneous, then in a second step the case of multilayered composite structures. Work is going on to extend the POM’s based detection procedure to nonlinear mechanical structures. Validation of the method has been conducted on different numerical simulation tests.
