Identification of Properties of Stochastic Dynamic Elasto-Plastic Systems

Abstract eng:
We describe the formulation of dynamic elasto-plastic systems not only under the influence of external random forcing but also with uncertain properties, including inertia, reversible characteristics like elasticity, as well as irreversible characteristics like plasticity. Based on this mathematical formulation, we use spectral stochastic finite element methods for the solution. For such — and also other systems — there is often an interest to identify certain characteristics or properties from observations or measurements. We describe a procedure to allow a Bayesian-kind of update of the uncertainty in the properties using the functional approximation developed for the numerical treatment. In particular the updating procedure works directly on the functional approximation without the need for costly Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling procedures.
