Effect of librations on the dynamics of free inner core and liquid in rotating cavity

Abstract eng:
The motion of fluid and a flee spherical core in a cavity rotating about a horizontal axis is experimentally investigated. The cavity rotation speed is modulated (librations). It is found that the action of librations leads to the generation of the azimuthal fluid motion, resulting in the averaged lagging differential rotation of the free core. It is shown that the contribution of librations in differential rotation is determined by the amplitude of librations, which depends on the Ekman number.
