Design and simulation on a morphing marine propeller

Abstract eng:
Marine propellers play an important role in Marine Technology. However, the comprehensive performance of conventional marine propellers seems to be lower for advanced marine vehicles. Therefore, the improvement on the marine propeller catches and attracts increasing attentions of marine vehicle researchers. And this paper comes up with a novel method to design the marine propeller based on the morphing concept. The design scheme consists of three steps: the addition of active rotation flap (ARF) on the trailing edge of each propeller blade; design of suitable smart actuator to drive the flap; overall assembling of each member for the entire morphing propeller. The overall propeller can change its configuration with the flap’s rotation. Then a simulation has been performed preliminarily for the acquisition of the dynamic properties of the morphing propeller. And the various dynamic properties have been obtained with different configurations of the propeller blades.
