Application of an IHB method to the vibration of a dielectric elastomer balloon

Abstract eng:
In this paper, an incremental harmonic balance method is employed to study the characteristics of the spherisymmetric vibration of dielectric elastomers. Subject to static pressure and voltage, a dielectric elastomer balloon will reach a state of equilibrium. If the voltage applied on the system becomes a sinusoidal function of time, the system exhibits strong nonlinearity, which leads to highly complex vibrational behaviours of the balloon. The incremental harmonic balance method coupled to an incremental arc-length method with a cubic extrapolation technique is adopted to successfully trace the amplitude-frequency relation of the balloon system with different damping factors.
