Particle stiffness influence on granular rheology

Abstract eng:
We investigate the role of particle stiffness on granular rheology by means of numerical simulations. We discuss under which conditions localized plastic events are present or not when the system is sheared. We also study the different contributions to energy dissipation and the grain coordination number, in order to draw a diagram separating a region where the grains flow in a liquid-like manner and another where their behavior is more akin to solid-like plasticity.
