Modelling non-planar vibrations of a string in the presence of doubly curved obstacle

Abstract eng:
The present paper investigates the characteristics of a string vibrating against a smooth unilateral obstacle pertaining to the Indian stringed musical instruments. In particular, we have studied the effect of coupling due to the variable tension and the geometry of the obstacle. The mathematical model has been developed using Hamilton’s principle followed by system discretization using the Galerkin approach and numerical investigations using runge-kutta algorithm. Numerical simulations have divulged the transition in characteristics of a string beyond a certain amplitude.
