Nonlinear Wave Transmission in Disordered Periodic Structures

Abstract eng:
We study wave transmission through a damped nonlinear periodic structure of finite length, subjected to continuous harmonic excitation at one end. Nonlinearity leads to supratransmission phenomenon by which enhanced wave transmission occurs within the stop band of the periodic structure when forced at an amplitude exceeding a threshold. Here, we study supratransmission in the presence of deviations from periodicity (disorder), introduced as small variations in stiffness parameters throughout the structure. We find that disorder does not influence the supratransmission force threshold in the ensemble-average sense, but it reduces the average transmitted wave energy.
