Non-destructive observation of damage processes by X-ray dynamic defectoscopy

Abstract eng:
The subject of this work is experimental observation of the development of internal damage and its evolution in aluminium alloy flat specimens with different configurations of the pre-crack. We propose direct and non-destructive observation of the material damage evolution by measuring changes in transmission of X-rays penetrating a stressed material, using a single photon counting X-ray imager, called Medipix-1. The specimens were loaded by grips displacement in tension. Observation was performed at a number of loading levels. The measured changes of structural defects in time were correlated with the loading-dependent surface strain field measured by the optical "Method of Interpolated Ellipses".
