Damage-plasticity simulation of a premature failure in FRP strengthened RC beams

Abstract eng:
This work is concerned with numerical modeling of “Peeling-off" or “Concrete cover separation” which is a premature failure mode in FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams. 3D Finite element simulations are made using the commercial program Abaqus. Four- point bending loading is applied on non-strengthened and FRP strengthened beams. A damaged plasticity constitutive law is used for the modeling of concrete. The asymmetric behavior of concrete in compression and tension, and the tension stiffening phenomenon are taken into account. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with some experimental results available in the literature. The flexural and the Peeling-off failure modes are well obtained in the simulations. Comparisons between the numerical predictions and test results illustrate a very good agreement and it is found that the proposed model is able to closely predict the ultimate load, the beam behavior and its failure mode.
