Elastoplastic analysis of circular openings in the generalized Hoek-Brown rock

Abstract eng:
In this paper, a closed-form solution is proposed for the axisymmetric elastoplastic plane strain analysis of displacements around circular openings in rock mass governed by the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Both associated and non-associated plasticity are considered. The solution is obtained by linearizing the non-linear failure criterion piecewise using the least-squares regression. The existing closed-form solution is based on a simplifying assumption that may result in significant errors. Other analytical solutions require the numerical solution of a differential equation. By comparing the results obtained by using the proposed solution with those obtained by using a numerical method for several cases, it is shown that the proposed solution produces reasonably accurate results even if a bilinear or trilinear approximation is considered and any desired level of accuracy may be achieved by using multilinear approximations.
