Hydrodynamic quantum analogs

Abstract eng:
A decade ago, Yves Couder and Emmanuel Fort discovered that a millimetric droplet may self-propel on the surface of a vibrating bath by virtue of a resonant interaction with its own wave field. This hydrodynamic system is unique in that it exhibits several features, both dynamical and statistical, previously thought to be exclusive to the microscopic, quantum realm. Moreover, its dynamics are reminiscent of an early realist model of quantum dynamics, Louis de Broglie’s pilot-wave theory. In my Sectional Lecture, I shall discuss prior and ongoing work in the experimental and theoretical modeling of this rich hydrodynamic pilot-wave system, and its relation to the modern extensions of de Broglie’s mechanics.
