The effect of calcitonin on the bone mechanical resistance

Abstract eng:
This work is founded on the co-operation of Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Laboratory of Biomechanics of Man and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague. The aim of this part of study is the determination, if the administration of Calcitonin affects the bone mechanical strength in rats. Direct biomechanical testing of bone undoubtedly provides more information about mechanical integrity then exist several methods, e.g. Ultrasound Transmission Velocity (UTV) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD). These methods are widely used as possible predictors of the bending strength of osteoporotic long bones from ovariectomized rats that may simulate a model for the human postmenopausal osteoporosis.
