Turbulent mixing in strongly stratified shear flows

Abstract eng:
Motivated by the importance of irreversible mixing in geophysical and environmental flows, we seek to understand the dependence of its efficiency under strongly stratified conditions through an investigation of two types of stratified shear instabilities: the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Holmboe wave instabilities. Our numerical findings suggests that mixing efficiency of energetically turbulent flows may never become suppressed despite arbitrarily strong stratification in the Holmboe wave case.
