Multi-resolution Analysis of the Turbulent Boundary Layer with Orthogonal Wavelet and Pod

Abstract eng:
The flat plate turbulent boundary layer triggered by a tripwire is measured with two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) in the plane perpendicular to the plate. An orthogonal wavelet multi-resolution technique has been applied to decompose the flow into a number of wavelet components. The coherent structures in each wavelet component are examined by the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. The POD modes of different wavelet components clearly reveal the cascade of scales in the turbulent boundary layer, while the POD modes of the measured data are only suitable to reveal the large coherent structures.
