Long-wave instabilities of two interlaced helical vortices

Abstract eng:
We present a comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the instabilities in the wake of a two- bladed rotor. The linear stability of the vortex system consisting of two helical vortices is described using the Biot—Savart induced velocity approach. Experiments are performed to investigate the breakdown scenario caused by both local and global pairing of successive vortex loops, and the observations are found to be in accordance with the theory.
