Strain and strain-rate dermination using digital image correlation

Abstract eng:
Digital Imaging Correlation systems for full-field strain analysis are based on traditional approaches to determine strains and strain-rates on the basis of the motion of discrete points in space and time. Both the theoretical background and concepts to verify the codes are missing for three-dimensional curved surfaces under large strains. In this presentation, we discuss various possible approaches for determining different strain measures and the possibility of obtaining the strain-rate as well. This discussion is performed in view of verification examples, where homogeneous and inhomogeneous deformations are prescribed. It turns out that under certain circumstances the strain determination might be inaccurate. Additional aspects, for example, real experimental data and the comparison to finite element results are treated as well.
