Effects of drag-reducing polymers on the transient development of turbulent coherent structures

Abstract eng:
Drag-reducing polymers have profound impact on the dynamics of turbulence, not only in the statistically-converged stage but also in its transient development. Understanding of the latter is essential for solving all major remaining problems in viscoelastic turbulence. Direct numerical simulation is used to study the transient growth of the laminar-turbulent edge state into full turbulence and comparison is made between Newtonian and viscoelastic fluid flows. Polymers are found to suppress turbulence growth throughout the process. Inspection of flow fields further reveals a different pattern of turbulence development after polymers are introduced.
