Nonlinear coupling between axial and transversal oscillations of shearable beams (INVITED)


Abstract eng:
Nonlinear free oscillations of a straight planar Timoshenko beam are investigated by means of the asymptotic development method. Attention is focused on the nonlinear coupling between axial and transversal oscillations of the beam, that are decoupled in the linear regime. The existence of coupled and uncoupled motion is discussed, and the softening vs hardening behaviour of the beam is investigated in depth.
