Nonlinear Oscillations of a Belt Drive

Abstract eng:
The dynamics of a visco-elastic belt drive is investigated after loss of stability of its steady configuration. It is well known, that for sufficiently large drive speeds the steady configuration generically loses stability by either a zero eigenvalue or a pair of purely imaginary eigenvalues. Using bifurcation theory we investigate the branching behaviour and stability of the bifurcating solution. Special attention will be paid to the influence of viscous material damping on the stability boundary and the postcritical branching behaviour.
