Analysis of forward and backward whirls in drilling

Abstract eng:
In this paper we discuss whirling motion of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) that occurs in downhole drilling, with particular Mm the co-existence of forward and backward whirls. First we present experimental results obtained on the unique drilling rig developed in Aberdeen and described in [2, 3], which are then used to calibrate a non-smooth low-dimensional model to investigate complex dynamics of the whirling motion.
